Hey, first-time cruisers, are you looking for an ultimate family vacation and want to sail on a luxury cruise but don’t know where to start?
I am right there with you. Yes, I am a first-time cruiser and a travel agent.
Even though I haven’t booked a cruise, I’m a pro at booking travel. Plus, I received training from industry professionals who taught me the how-tos, needs, and what to have for a cruise vacation.
PLAN AND BOOK A LUXURY CRUISE WITH THE FAMILY.
Since it’s your first time cruising, I’d love to share some excellent benefits of booking a luxury cruise for your family! Everyone will be well-fed on the ship, as meals are included in the cost!
ALL-INCLUDED ONBOARD FOR THE FAMILY.
You can enjoy different food flavors, such as Italian pasta, delectable desserts, sit-down breakfast, lunch, or buffet pizza, burgers, tacos, ice cream, and more. You can also request special dietary options.
PLAN TO BE ENTERTAINED.
You and the family can also experience activities on the ship while you’re sailing to your destination. For instance, live performances, music, dance lessons, and local foods give you a close-up of what you and the family will experience at the place you’re visiting.
ADULTS AND KIDS CAN PLAY.
If you love playing poker or slot machines, you and your spouse can go to the casino while the kids play at a kids club with other kids on the ship. Check with the cruise line or your travel agent about pricing or signing up before you board so you are prepared for date nights with your spouse.
PLAN DATE NIGHT OR CATCH A SHOW WITH THE FAMILY.
Ships offer spas, pools, and hot tubs for a relaxing and rejuvenating vacation. Add on a show while on board.
Perfect for first-time cruisers, you will be entertained by Broadway shows, party with a live band and dance the night away, laugh at some comedies, or see a magic show.
Just pass the time away on board before you arrive at the destination and enjoy an unforgettable, exciting culture tour, which is the ultimate benefit of booking a culture cruise vacation.
PLAN TO SET A BUDGET

Let’s start planning: Where are you looking to tour? Are you looking to tour Europe, Asia, South America, or Alaska?
Whichever destination you are looking to tour, you need a budget. How long will you be on the ship?
One to five days, six to nine, or more. Cruise itineraries are very affordable, and some are over budget; it depends on what your savings account is saying.
Payment plans are optional with a travel agent.
HOTEL, FLIGHT, & INSURANCE
You must factor in the flight to the departure port, the overnight hotel stay, travel insurance, and shore excursions.
There’s a ton to do on the cruise ship that’s not included, like shopping, top-shelf drinks, and more. While at the destinations, food, activities, and extra will cost.
Let’s imagine your departure port is in Southampton, England, London; you must stay overnight to avoid missing the ship’s departure. They will not wait for you if your flight is delayed.
Once you arrive at your cruise ship departure destination, you may want souvenirs or dine out while waiting for the ship’s departure. Well, that’s going to cost you.
While on the excursion, you don’t want to be without cash for extra purchases, like water, snacks, food, or emergency money for medical expenses in a different country. So you will make a budget for the whole trip, before, during, and after.

PLANNING AND BOOKING THE LUXURY CRUISE LINE AND THE ITINERARY.
As you plan this cruise vacation for the first time, you would want to research the cruise line that best fits your budget, time on the ship, things to do on and off the cruise ship, reviews from others, and group pages of other experienced cruisers sharing their stories and tips.
If you’re still unsure, a travel agent can guide you in the right direction on the best options that suit your needs.
ASK QUESTIONS AND RESEARCH.
If you want to put together the whole vacation yourself on your own time, get some questions from travelers going on the vacation, answer them, and then use Google for research, help, and reviews.
Don’t forget to add cultural excursions to countries like Alaska, Bahamas, Belize, Spain, Japan, Hong Kong or Australia.
CHECK THE CALENDAR.
Since the kids are going, you should plan the vacation on and around the school calendar so the kids don’t miss days or work assignments.
Opt into booking the vacation on holidays, fall break, spring break, or summer break. Be sure you request your PTO as well.
THE STATEROOM AND THE EXCURSIONS.
The staterooms on most cruise ships accommodate a small to large family. Suppose you don’t want to share a room; select rooms that are adjoined to keep you, and the kids close by, allowing more room on shore.
Some suites offer more rooms in the suite so that you can stay in a bigger stateroom versus two smaller rooms.

PLAN TO BE BUSY ONBOARD AND ON LAND.
Being on vacation, you will not be worried about staying in a stateroom for one whole day. There’s just too much to do on the ship.
Also, when you arrive at the destination, you should have a confirmed booking for a cultural and historical tour for the family.
Most cruise lines offer shore excursions with the booking, so you can plan for the day to explore a new destination and get some fantastic photos and videos to share with your family and friends to make them want to go on an adventure.

BOOKING AND PREPARING TO SAIL ON A LUXURY CRUISE.
Now that you know what you need, how much you will spend, and what to do as a first-time cruiser looking for a culture and historical vacation on a cruise for you and your family, it’s time to book.
Be sure when you are booking you are looking out for the weather and news in the country visiting so you know where and when to go.
If you are not comfortable or unsure if you are planning this vacation right, contact your travel agent and ask them to help you plan, research, book, and manage your vacation.
PLAN AHEAD, HAVE YOUR DOCUMENTS READY.
Your vacation is booked, you need to make sure you have your documents together, along with any health records for the cruise or country. Be sure to have a copy of the trip itinerary.
Here’s a great tip: have these documents printed and hard copied, and save them on your phone device where they are saved without needing the internet.
There will be a time when your phone doesn’t have access to internet service, and you may need to show proof of your documents.
Be ready, and be prepared at all times.
PACKING THE ESSENTIALS IS GOOD PLANNING.

While on your vacation, it’s a great idea to pack all the essentials needed for your trip, even on your excursion. Here are seven helpful essentials;
- Anti-theft Bags: Anti-theft bags with locking zippers and RFID-blocking compartments are crucial to safeguard personal belongings while exploring foreign cities. This ensures that essential items like passports, cash, and credit cards are secure against theft.
- Comfortable Footwear: Family activities often include significant walking—exploring ancient ruins or navigating bustling streets. Comfortable shoes can enhance the experience and ensure the children stay happy and energized throughout the day.
- Identification and Documents: Always ensure that passports are valid and accessible. It’s also wise to carry a copy of important travel documents and IDs in emergencies.
- Medications and First Aid: Bring any necessary medications and a compact first aid kit. This preparation is critical when traveling with children.
- Sunscreen, Hats, and Sunglasses: As many excursions occur during warm hours, sun protection is essential. Ensuring everyone in the family is protected from UV rays will create a comfortable and enjoyable experience.
- Reusable Water Bottles: Staying hydrated is critical, especially in warm climates. Reusable water bottles alleviate the need to purchase single-use plastic bottles, offering convenience and environmental consciousness.
- Travel Guides or Apps: While many cruise lines provide shore excursion details, having quick access to travel guides or smartphone apps can help families explore historical accounts at their own pace. Consider downloading offline maps beforehand to facilitate navigation in unfamiliar cities.
