I love traveling with my family of four, and the best trips are the ones that are easy to plan, close enough to drive, don’t require flying, and actually feel like a break from everyday life.
You’ll find your next getaway on this blog, where to stay, and what to pack so your trip is smooth from start to finish.

A stay vacation in Atlanta can be the best place for vacation and to have fun. But don’t wait because they do book up fast, especially on the weekends. And plenty of people in Georgia like taking vacations in Atlanta.
I have definitely seen my share of staycationers from Georgia staying in Atlanta on the weekends, as I am a guest service agent working at a major hotel in downtown Atlanta. Check out this blog that shows more details about how to book without overspending and avoiding hidden fees.

1. Destin, Florida (Beach + Relaxation)
Drive time: ~4 hours
Yes! Destin is worth the drive.
We did a road trip here, and the moment we saw that clear water, it felt like we were in the Caribbean. And driving in there made me feel like I was back up north at the Jersey Shore.
Destin, Florida, is perfect for families who want:
- Beach days
- Family relaxation
- Seafood spots
There are definitely a lot of seafood spots in Florida, especially since being close to the ocean, you’ll get some wild-caught, fresh-tasting fish. That is one thing I do love about traveling to the coast, better tasting fish that I cannot get in the city of Atlanta.

2. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina (Family Fun + Boardwalk)
Drive time: ~4 hours
This is one of those places where there’s always something to do.
When my family and I went to Myrtle Beach, it was great.
There is so much to do for families, like:
- Activities for kids
- Boardwalk fun
- Food + entertainment all in one area
When my family and I went, we had a blast. We stayed at a condo with a kitchenette, and we cooked our own food. There was a local seafood store where you could buy raw, fresh fish.
Check out the latest blog that I have posted, which talks more about our experience.

3. Blue Ridge, Georgia (Cabin + Quiet Time)
Drive time: ~2 hours
If you need a peaceful reset away from the busy area of the city of Atlanta, or just getting away from work, this is it.
We stayed in a cabin once, and honestly, it felt like a completely different world. There was a hot tub, a grill on the balcony, and so many different local experiences that felt very country and southern.
Blue Ridge is perfect for:
- Families who want quiet
- Couples who want a reset
- Nature lovers
Do be aware that there were reviews of black bears in the area. I don’t think they’re harmful, and they don’t do anything. Even though I haven’t seen one when we went out. However, there are articles online that talk about bears in Blue Ridge. Just keep aware, don’t leave food out, and stay alert.

4. Chattanooga, Tennessee (City + Nature Mix)
Drive time: ~2 hours
Chattanooga is one of those easy trips that gives you a little bit of everything. They have a lot of activities, restaurants to check out, and historical areas of the Civil War.
Families can plan for:
- Aquarium visits
- Riverfront walks
- Family-friendly attractions

5. Savannah, Georgia (History + Coastal Views)
Drive time: ~4 hours
Savannah has a slower, more relaxed, and historical vibe.
This town is great for families and couples who want:
- Walkable areas
- Beautiful scenery
- Good food
I haven’t been out there yet, but it is on my bucket list to visit Savannah and any of the local beaches that are about 30 minutes to an hour away from Savannah, which is fine because I can do two trips in one.

6. Helen, Georgia (Fun + Unique Experience)
Drive time: ~1.5–2 hours
Helen is one of those places that feels completely different. I mean, completely different. It looks like it’s in Germany, and they have so many activities to do. There’s also a Cabbage Patch house that is in the area, which is so amazing because I grew up having a Cabbage Patch baby that I adopted.
When you’re driving to Helen, you really feel like you’re in a different time zone, like the 1930s through the 50’s. There are old stores and gas stations that haven’t been torn down. They kept it up. Once you get into the town, there are so many activities for families, and it just looks like Germany, and I haven’t even been to Germany.
Helen is great for families to do:
- Tubing
- Quick weekend trips
- Shopping
- Amusement Park
Book cabins or hotels in Helen..

7. Jekyll Island, Georgia (Beach + Peaceful Escape)
Drive time: ~4 hours
If you want a quieter beach, this is a great option. This island is about a half hour to a hour away from Savannah so if you are going to visit Savannah, this is one spot that you can make that two trips in one weekend type of vacation.
This area is great for a 3-4 day weekend vacation for:
- Families
- Relaxing beach days
- Less crowded spaces

8. LaGrange, Georgia (Quick Family Escape)
Drive time: ~1 hour
This is a perfect short weekend trip without going far from Atlanta. You can take the kids to Great Wolf Lodge for an indoor water activity. Plus, enjoy dinner at local restaurants for some southern cooking.
Book family-friendly stays in LaGrange, Ga..

9. Highlands, North Carolina (Mountain + Scenic Views)
Drive time: ~2.5–3 hours
This is a great option if you want something different from Georgia.
I drove through North Carolina, didn’t really stay, just visited family. I’ve heard there are a lot of scenic and Mountain Views. Plus, this would be more of a chill, relaxing weekend.
Book a vacation here for:
- Scenic drives
- Cooler weather
- Quiet trips
Find mountain stays in Highlands, NC..

10. Jacksonville, Florida (Beach + City Combo)
Drive time: ~4–4.5 hours
Time to head back to the beach and some live city vibes. Since I haven’t visited Jacksonville, Florida, my husband has told me it reminded him of the Jersey Shore, like Wildwood Beach, New Jersey. The boardwalk, the local attractions, museums, plus loads of food and activities on the boardwalk, but still a good city vibe.
Jacksonville gives families:
- Beaches
- Restaurants
- Family activities
This is definitely on my bucket list.
Road Trip Essentials That Make Everything Easier
Honestly! Having the right items in the car makes ALL the difference. Even if it’s having these items in your vehicle while going to work, everyday life, and road trips. My dad always made sure I had the right items in my car for any situation.
To be prepared for road trips, these are the must-haves:
- Cooler for snacks and drinks
- Travel pillows and blankets
- Portable phone chargers
- Headphones for kids
“Save money by bringing your own snacks and drinks instead of stopping every hour.”

What I’ve Learned from Road Trips
Since we’re always traveling from Atlanta, I’ve learned a few things:
- Pack based on where you’re going
- Book your stay early
- Keep your trip simple
There were times we overpacked, and times we forgot the one thing we needed.
That’s why planning ahead matters.
By The Way…
