Planning a family staycation is one of the easiest ways to enjoy a fun, affordable getaway without leaving your city or blowing the budget.
A staycation gives you all the “I’m finally off work and relaxed” energy without the airport chaos, long road trips, or the “Did we really just spend $700 on restaurants alone?,” moment at the end of the weekend.
So today, I want to share exactly how to plan the perfect staycation for couples with kids, especially if you’re trying to save money, reduce stress, and enjoy more family time without leaving your state.
And I’ll sprinkle in my personal story of the time we booked a beach staycation, packed half the house, and still forgot the one thing we really needed.
If you want more inspiration for your next family staycation, check out my blog about our family weekend vacation in Myrtle Beach: Fun for All Ages. That trip reminded me how much joy you can find close to home when you plan it right. From beach days to simple family activities, it’s the perfect example of how a quick getaway can still feel like a real vacation.

Why a Staycation Is the Perfect Vacation for Families
A staycation is perfect for couples with kids because:
- it’s affordable
- the travel is shorter
- you can still make memories
- there’s less planning stress
- you can enjoy vacation vibes without going far
For families on a budget, this is the best way to vacation more and spend less. But the key to a good staycation is… planning it right.
Here’s how to do it.
Why a Family Staycation Can Be Just as Magical as a Big Trip
For our family, we booked a beach staycation for a 3-day holiday weekend, nothing too far, but far enough to feel like a break from home. That’s honestly the sweet spot, no more than 3 hours away.
You still get new scenery, something different to look at, and a full “we’re on vacation” feeling without the “are we there yet?” every 12 minutes from the backseat.
Some good staycation ideas for families:
- beach towns within driving distance
- lake houses
- a nearby city with attractions
- a resort-style hotel
- a family-friendly condo or villa
- a small mountain town with nature activities
Whatever you pick, choose something close enough to reduce stress but fun enough to feel like a getaway.

How to Set a Realistic Budget for Your Family Staycation
We booked a condo for our beach staycation, and let me tell you having a full kitchen changes everything when you’re traveling with kids. Why?
Because:
- You don’t have to eat out for every meal
- You can make breakfast or snacks right in the room
- The kids can eat on their schedule
- You save SO much money
- You can control the meals when your kids are picky
We ate breakfast and dinner in the condo and saved money for fun things during the day. Restaurants? Only when we wanted to, not because we had to. Check out the condo we stayed at in Myrtle Beach.
If you’re a family looking to vacation more without spending more, I highly recommend booking a condo, suite, or vacation rental with a kitchen.
What to Pack for a Stress-Free Family Staycation
Listen… I wish someone had told me this before our trip.
We packed like we were going on a 7-day trip. I brought so many things “just in case” that we barely had room in the car.
Then, when we arrived, guess what? Half the stuff we packed was already in the condo.
Plates.
Bowls.
Pots.
Pans.
Even the things I worried about not having, they had. And the things I assumed they’d have? Didn’t.

That’s why my biggest tip is: before you go, message the host or check the list of what’s included so you don’t overpack.
Then create a packing checklist:
- clothes
- swim gear
- toiletries
- snacks
- entertainment for the kids
- beach items or pool items
- your personal “must haves.”
Your future self will thank you.
Set Your Family Staycation Budget Before You Go
I always tell my family and friends this: a staycation only stays affordable when you plan your budget first.
Here’s what you should set limits for:
- lodging
- gas
- food & groceries
- activities
- souvenirs
- emergency money
- fun money
A simple budget makes your staycation stress-free and helps you avoid overspending on things you don’t need.

Build a Simple Family Staycation Itinerary
I know some families love jam-packed schedules, but for me? I want a mix of relaxing and fun.
Your itinerary could be simple, like:
- Day 1: Arrive, check in, explore the area
- Day 2: Beach, pool, or local attractions
- Day 3: Breakfast, pack up, one last activity
Families with children do better with flexible, light itineraries anyway.
And if you want help creating one, I highly recommend having a staycation planning checklist or planner so everything is organized before you go.
Family Staycation Activities the Kids Will Love
Some fun and easy staycation ideas:
- beach day
- mini golf
- local aquarium or zoo
- a waterfront restaurant
- a picnic
- a movie night in the room
- renting bikes
- visiting a local boardwalk
Kids don’t need expensive activities. They just need something fun to do, something new to see, and parents who aren’t stressed out.

Staycations Let You Vacation More, Spend Less, and Stress Less
Staycations are perfect for couples with children because they give you the chance to relax, connect, explore, and create memories, without traveling far or overspending.
Our beach staycation taught me:
- always check what’s already included
- book a condo with a kitchen
- pack lighter
- plan smarter
- and enjoy the little moments
And honestly? That’s what made it perfect.
